HIV in Canada (MSM)

Information on HIV positive tests are collected across Canada and submitted to the Public Health Agency of Canada for reporting at the national level.  These reports showed that before 2000 the proportion of HIV test results attributable to MSM was steadily decreasing: from 74.2% before 1999 to around 48% in 1999.  In 2000, the proportion of MSM among adult male positive HIV tests was 53.7%, representing the first increase since the 1980s.  In 2005, the proportion of MSM among adult male positive HIV tests was 57.1%.

At the end of 2005, 51% (29,600 out of 58,000) of those living with HIV in Canada were MSM.  Of all new cases of HIV diagnosed in that year (2005) 45% were among MSM.

In Manitoba, between 1985 and 1995, 65% of all HIV cases diagnosed were among MSM.  From 2996-2006 MSM as primary mode of transmission accounted for 18% of all new HIV cases in the province.  In 2006, the proportion of MSM among adult males testing positive for HIV was 25% (13 out of 51).
