What is an STI test?

A standard STI test will test for hepatitis B, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. You will be tested for Hepatitis C if you have any risk factors, and herpes if you have sores present. An HIV test is separate from an STI test and you have to request it if you want to be tested.

You will have blood drawn to test for Hepatitis B, and syphilis, and swabs taken from your vagina or penis to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

  • Your health information is confidential, as legislated by PHIA (Personal Health Information Act).  The Act governs all staff working at Nine Circles and Cadham Provincial Laboratory.
  • A blood sample is sent to the Lab with your name on the test requisition and specimen, just like every other medical test you have.
  • The confidential test results are documented in your medical chart.
  • Because STIs are transmitted sexually, it is highly recommended you are also tested for HIV.  These tests can be done nominally, non-nominally or anonymously (see above)
  • A positive STI test result always requires that contact tracing be done.
  • If your STI test is positive, you can receive treatment and services right away.
