Nine Circles News (February 2020)

Read on for news about a generous grant, a new fundraiser, upcoming renovations & changes to our phone system!

Last month, Nine Circles was honoured to receive a $50,000 grant from The Winnipeg Foundation as part of a strategy to provide $5.27 million to charities that work in mental health, addictions and community safety. Generally, The Foundation supports specific initiatives, but these grants are unrestricted because they recognize that the “challenges Winnipeg has been facing in the areas of mental health and addictions are complicated and inter-connected… and the current situation calls for a more immediate and coordinated effort.” They also wanted to acknowledge that “organizations know best how to use the funds in the community.”

We are currently planning how we’ll use the grant, and will reveal our plans in the coming months.

Thank you very much to The Winnipeg Foundation for your generous support, and for trusting the expertise of front-line organizations!

Nine Circles is currently recruiting restaurants for a new fundraiser called A Taste for Life. Taste started in Ottawa in 1999 in support of Bruce House and the Snowy Owl AIDS Foundation. Since then, it has grown into a national event, with 23 communities from Alberta to Quebec participating. Participating restaurants will open their doors on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 and donate 25% of their evening sales to Nine Circles. All you have to do to participate is go out for dinner! More info coming soon.

This summer, Nine Circles will be renovating! We engaged with Shared Health’s Capital Planning to complete a selection process for a design firm and Republic Architecture was the winning bid. The goal of the project is to:

  • renovate the waiting area to improve safety, privacy, and confidentiality, and create a brighter, more welcoming space for our diverse clients
  • renovate our entrance/exit areas to improve safety and explore better solutions for bikes, accessibility and mobility
  • renovate the clinical space to increase the number of exam rooms and improve patient flow

As part of the process, we will be holding two community forums to get feedback from clients and community members. One will be held during the day, and one will be held in the evening. Stay tuned for dates and more info!

Working at a reception desk in a busy community health centre can be a juggling act. There are phones to answer, people to greet, emails to return, scheduling to do and the list goes on. When people walk into Nine Circles, we want to ensure our Health Care Receptionists are available to help, so in the next few weeks, we’re going to be making some changes to our telephone access in order to free up more time for in-person interactions. We know automated phone systems aren’t everyone’s favourite thing, so with that in mind, our goal is to make ours as simple as possible. When you call, you’ll spend less time on hold, have to leave fewer voicemails and in most cases, will be able to connect with the person or department you want without having to go through reception. Don’t worry- you will still get to speak to an actual human; you just might have to hit a couple buttons first!
